7 Habits People With High IQs Tend to Avoid, According to Psychologists

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Intelligence quotient (IQ) is often used to measure cognitive ability, but psychologists say certain everyday behaviors may also reflect how people think and approach challenges.

While no scientific evidence proves that daily habits directly indicate IQ, experts agree that highly intelligent people often avoid behaviors that can limit personal growth and decision-making.

Here are seven habits psychologists say people with high intellectual ability tend to avoid.

1. Judging others

Highly intelligent people are less likely to judge others quickly. They recognize that everyone has different experiences and perspectives.

“Everyone has a different capacity and level of awareness to see, hear, and understand,” psychologist Carolyn Hidalgo said.

2. Letting emotions take control

Emotionally intelligent people acknowledge their feelings without allowing emotions to dictate every decision.

Psychologist Nick Wignall said emotions carry information, but they are not always accurate or helpful.

3. Being overconfident

People with high IQs rarely assume they know everything. Instead, they practice intellectual humility by recognizing that their beliefs and opinions may be wrong.

4. Multitasking

Although multitasking appears productive, many intelligent people avoid it. They prefer focusing on one task at a time to improve efficiency and reduce mistakes.

5. Always looking for shortcuts

Rather than avoiding challenges, intelligent people often embrace them as opportunities to learn.

Psychologist Lisa Newman said a growth mindset encourages people to learn from difficult situations instead of seeking the easiest solution.

6. Chasing perfection

Highly intelligent people focus on progress instead of perfection. They understand that mistakes are part of learning and long-term improvement.

7. Resisting change

Instead of fearing change, intelligent people often welcome new experiences. They see unfamiliar situations as opportunities to develop new skills and broaden their perspectives.

Experts caution that these behaviors should not be treated as a reliable measure of intelligence. Personality, upbringing, emotional development, and life experiences also shape how people think and behave.
