6 Science-Backed Ways to Help Children Love Vegetables

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Getting children to eat enough vegetables is a common struggle for many parents. While picky eating can be frustrating, experts say children’s dislike of vegetables has a biological explanation rather than simply being stubborn behavior.

Researchers explain that humans naturally prefer sweet flavors from infancy. Breast milk contains natural sugars, making sweetness familiar from the earliest stages of life. As a result, vegetables with bitter or bland flavors often seem less appealing when children begin eating solid foods.

A varied diet rich in vegetables and fruit is essential for healthy growth. Studies have linked balanced nutrition to better cognitive development, concentration, behavior, and academic performance. Meanwhile, poor eating habits during childhood may increase the risk of obesity and long-term health problems.

Researchers have identified several practical strategies that can help children become more willing to eat vegetables.

1. Introduce Vegetables Early

Experts recommend exposing children to vegetables as early as possible. According to Marion Hetherington, Professor of Biopsychology at the University of Leeds, the preschool years are especially important for shaping food preferences.

Research suggests children may need between five and fifteen exposures before they accept a new vegetable. Younger infants often adapt more quickly, while preschool-aged children commonly develop food neophobia, or a fear of unfamiliar foods.

2. Serve Vegetables Before the Main Meal

Offering vegetables before other foods can increase the chances that children will eat them. They are usually hungrier at the beginning of a meal and more willing to try different foods.

Nutrition expert Barbara Rolls from Pennsylvania State University also notes that eating vegetables first may help prevent overeating later in the meal.

3. Increase the Healthy Portion

Parents can gradually replace calorie-dense foods with larger servings of vegetables.

Studies show that increasing the amount of fruits and vegetables on a child’s plate by 50% encourages higher consumption without increasing food refusal. In addition, offering several vegetable choices during meals can motivate preschoolers to eat more healthy foods.

4. Make Vegetables More Appealing

Presentation matters, especially for young children.

Researchers found that vegetables cut into fun shapes, such as flowers, butterflies, or animals, become more attractive. Serving vegetables in colorful divided containers also encourages preschool children to eat significantly more.

5. Eat Together as a Family

Family meals play an important role in shaping children’s eating habits.

Experts recommend eating together several times each week because children naturally imitate the behavior of their parents and siblings. Regular family meals have also been associated with healthier diets and better weight management.

6. Keep Mealtimes Relaxed

Pressuring children to finish their vegetables often produces the opposite effect.

Instead, experts encourage parents to let children explore vegetables by touching, smelling, or observing them without forcing them to take a bite. A relaxed environment reduces anxiety around unfamiliar foods and increases the likelihood that children will try them later.

Building healthy eating habits takes time and patience. However, consistent exposure, positive family routines, and pressure-free mealtimes can gradually help children develop a lifelong appreciation for vegetables.
