According to the American Lung Association, people with asthma are still encouraged to stay active as long as they manage their symptoms properly.

Exercise can help improve lung capacity, blood circulation, and oxygen flow throughout the body.

Some asthma patients may experience symptoms such as wheezing, chest tightness, coughing, or shortness of breath during intense physical activity.

Doctors describe this condition as exercise-induced asthma or exercise-induced bronchospasm.

Still, experts said asthma should not stop people from maintaining an active lifestyle.

Here are several safe exercise tips for people with asthma:

  1. Always start with a warm-up
Warm-ups help prepare the lungs and heart before intense movement. Experts recommend warming up for at least 10 minutes before exercising.
  2. Choose exercises with short intervals
Long endurance sports like marathons or nonstop futsal may trigger asthma symptoms for some people. Instead, patients can choose walking, swimming, cycling, yoga, or pilates with regular rest breaks.
  3. Try strength training exercises
Exercises like squats, push-ups, planks, and light weightlifting often place less pressure on breathing compared to endurance workouts.
  4. Avoid asthma triggers
Poor air quality, smoke, dust, cold temperatures, and pollution can worsen asthma symptoms during exercise. Because of that, choosing a clean and comfortable environment becomes important.
  5. Always carry an inhaler or medication
Asthma symptoms can sometimes appear suddenly. Carrying an inhaler allows patients to respond quickly if breathing problems occur during workouts.

Doctors also reminded asthma patients to stop exercising immediately if they experience severe chest pain, heavy coughing, or difficulty breathing.

Meanwhile, health experts stressed that proper preparation and symptom management can help many asthma patients stay active safely.
