18,504 Police Officers Deployed to Secure 27 August Jakarta Protest

Jakarta, ThedailyID — A total of 18,504 police personnel have been deployed across several locations in Central Jakarta to secure demonstrations taking place on Thursday (27/8).

Central Jakarta Police Chief Kombes Reynold EP Hutagalung said officers would prioritize a humanist and persuasive approach while allowing people to express their opinions in accordance with the law.

“We are here to provide a sense of security and comfort to everyone expressing their aspirations. The officers on duty are not carrying firearms or sharp weapons,” said Reynold in a statement, Thursday (27/8).

Police divided the security operation into six zones, covering areas around the DPR/MPR complex, Semanggi, Pancasila Gate, Palmerah, BPK RI and other strategic locations.

Officers were also deployed around Bundaran HI and Dukuh Atas to monitor crowd movements and traffic conditions.

Traffic officers have prepared situational diversions if protesters cause congestion or block roads. Police also urged motorists to avoid protest areas if crowds begin to affect traffic.

Reynold called on protesters to avoid violence and damage to public facilities.

“Let us oversee the delivery of these aspirations so that it runs in an orderly and peaceful manner without disrupting public security or activities,” said Reynold, Thursday (27/8).

Outside Jakarta, Tangerang Police also deployed around 200 personnel to monitor and prevent crowds, particularly students, from traveling to Jakarta for the protest.

Officers were stationed at several border routes, toll gates and railway stations. The operation also involved the military, transportation officials and municipal police.

“We are preparing to anticipate crowds heading to Jakarta, particularly students from junior and senior high schools,” said Tangerang Police Operations Chief Kompol Raden Mochammad Sofian, Thursday (27/8).

Police said the security operation would continue to prioritize a persuasive approach while encouraging protesters to express their aspirations peacefully.
