Jakarta, ThedailyID — Officials confirmed that 12 Hajj pilgrims from East Java died in Saudi Arabia during the 2026 Hajj season.

The Surabaya Hajj Embarkation also recorded one additional death in Indonesia before departure. The total number of deaths linked to the East Java Hajj process has now reached 13 people.

Head of the Surabaya Hajj Embarkation Organizing Committee, Mohammad As’adul Anam, said the pilgrims died in Mecca and Medina during the pilgrimage period.

“Pilgrims who died overseas in Medina and Mecca totaled 12 people. Meanwhile, one pilgrim died before departure here in Surabaya,” Anam said on Tuesday.

The deceased pilgrims came from several regions, including Pasuruan, Malang, Lamongan, Gresik, Jombang, Probolinggo, Sidoarjo, and Jember.

Meanwhile, Tini Atmin, a 56-year-old pilgrim from Gresik, died in Indonesia before departure. Doctors treated her for heart disease at a hospital in Surabaya before she passed away.

Anam explained that officials would still complete the pilgrims’ Hajj obligations through the badal haji mechanism, where another person performs the rituals on behalf of the deceased pilgrim.

He also expressed condolences to the families and prayed for the pilgrims’ worship to be accepted.

Besides the deaths, officials also delayed the departures of 10 pilgrims because of health conditions and other factors.

The delayed cases included pregnancy complications, amnesia, heart disease, and dialysis treatment.

As of the 29th day of departures, Embarkasi Surabaya had sent 40,207 pilgrims and officers to the Holy Land.

The number already reached around 91 percent of the total planned departures for the 2026 Hajj season through Surabaya.

Officials stated that departure operations continued running smoothly while officers strengthened coordination to support pilgrims from dormitory arrival until departure to Saudi Arabia.
