Jakarta, ThedailyID — Manchester City could face a massive points deduction and relegation to the Championship over alleged financial rule breaches in the Premier League.
The scandal gained media attention in September 2026. According to the Premier League’s official findings, the club was found guilty of more than 100 serious breaches covering the period from 2009 to 2018.
During those years, Manchester City won eight trophies, including three Premier League titles.
A report by Daily Mail journalist Oliver Holt suggests the Premier League could announce its sanctions soon. The report predicts that the decision may come before the outcome of Manchester City’s appeal, which the article says was scheduled for late January 2026.
Holt’s report suggests Manchester City could receive a substantial points deduction this season and drop to the Championship, England’s second tier. The club could then face another points deduction next season, potentially keeping it in the second division.
The potential penalties could also include a significant financial fine. However, the sanctions described in the report remain predictions, not a confirmed final decision.
The Premier League’s independent commission found that Manchester City breached financial rules between the 2009/10 and 2017/18 seasons.
The alleged violations included arranging false contracts with commercial partners and making fictitious agreements with other parties to increase the club’s reported revenue.
The commission also found that Manchester City submitted inaccurate financial information and concealed its true financial position from auditors.
Any final punishment could have major consequences for the club, which has established itself as one of English football’s most successful teams over the past decade. A points deduction or relegation would also significantly affect its future in the Premier League.
