Jakarta, ThedailyID — The 2026 Asian Games officially ended on Sunday, October 4, following the closing ceremony in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
The event brought together athletes from across Asia to compete for medals over the past several weeks. It also produced a significant number of new records.
According to OCA Director General Husain Al Musallam, athletes broke 54 world records, 11 junior world records and 89 Asian records during the 2026 Asian Games.
Al Musallam said the achievement reflected the environment created for athletes during the Games. He highlighted factors such as accommodation, transportation and other facilities.
“These achievements would not have come without the best environment created by the organizers for the athletes,” Al Musallam said, as quoted by the South China Morning Post on Monday, October 5.
He also said athletes need proper rest and support to perform at their best. Good transportation and facilities, he added, were part of that support.
Indonesia also contributed to the record-breaking performances through weightlifter Rahmat Erwin Abdullah.
Rahmat won gold in the men’s 75-kilogram category. He set a world record in the total lift with 366 kilograms.
He also broke the world record in the clean and jerk. His record stood at 206 kilograms.
Another Indonesian athlete, Desak Made Rita Kusuma Dewi, set a new Asian Games record in sport climbing.
She finished with a time of 6.062 seconds. The result also broke the Asian Games record previously held by Desak herself.
The 2026 Asian Games ended after several weeks of competition. Despite controversies surrounding the host country, the event produced dozens of world and Asian records.
