Jakarta, ThedailyID — Indonesia’s Attorney General’s Office (AGO) is reviewing a Jakarta High Court ruling that reduced former Education Minister Nadiem Makarim’s prison sentence to nine years.
AGO spokesperson Anang Supriatna said prosecutors will first examine the full court ruling. The prosecution team will decide its next step after receiving the written decision.
“The prosecution team will study the ruling after we receive a copy of the decision,” Anang said on Thursday, September 24.
Anang said the AGO respects the decision issued by the appellate judges. He added that prosecutors will act according to the applicable legal procedures and deadlines.
“We respect the ruling and will study it first. The prosecution will then decide its position within the period set by law,” Anang said.
The Jakarta High Court previously reduced Nadiem’s sentence in the corruption case involving the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management (CDM).
The procurement involved the 2020-2022 fiscal years.
The appellate court sentenced Nadiem to nine years in prison. It also imposed a Rp1 billion fine.
The fine must be paid within one month after the ruling becomes legally binding. The court can extend the payment period for up to another month.
The appellate judges also reduced Nadiem’s compensation payment. The amount fell to Rp548.76 billion, with a subsidiary sentence of six years in prison.
The ruling is lighter than the sentence handed down by the Central Jakarta District Court’s Corruption Court.
The AGO has not announced its final response to the appellate ruling. Prosecutors will first study the written decision before determining their next legal step.
