Jakarta, ThedailyID — Granit Xhaka could face a prison sentence after admitting that he used a fake Covid-19 vaccination certificate while playing for Arsenal.
Swiss authorities are investigating the case. If prosecutors find Xhaka guilty, he could face a large fine or up to five years in prison.
The Sunderland captain is scheduled to give a statement to Swiss authorities in October.
Xhaka admitted that he did not trust Covid-19 vaccines at the time. He obtained the fake vaccination certificate in 2022.
Covid-19 vaccination certificates were required for players competing in the English Premier League at the time. The certificate could also help shorten quarantine periods after international travel.
“Recently, there have been many reports about something from my past. I want to address this matter personally,” Xhaka said in a statement posted on Instagram on Monday, September 21.
“At the time, I personally had serious doubts and concerns about Covid-19 vaccination,” he said.
“I had very little trust in the vaccine and felt fear and uncertainty. In that emotional state, I obtained a vaccination certificate instead of seeking proper answers through the appropriate channels,” Xhaka added.
The 33-year-old midfielder acknowledged his mistake. He also apologized for his actions.
“I now fully understand that this was not the right decision. It was a mistake, and I apologize,” Xhaka said.
Swiss authorities will continue investigating the matter. Xhaka is expected to provide further information during his scheduled hearing in October.
