Jakarta, ThedailyID — A magnitude 5.2 tectonic earthquake struck off the southern coast of Malang, East Java, on Monday, September 14.
The earthquake occurred at 8:42 a.m. local time, according to updated data from Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency (BMKG).
BMKG placed the epicenter at sea, at coordinates 9.52°S and 112.85°E. The location sits about 156 kilometers southeast of Malang Regency, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
According to Ricko Kardoso, head of the BMKG Geophysical Station in Malang, the tremors spread across parts of southern coastal East Java and the region known as the eastern Java “horseshoe.”
Residents in Pacitan, Tulungagung, Blitar, Malang, Lumajang, Jember, Kediri, Bondowoso and Batu City reported feeling the earthquake.
“The shaking intensity in these areas reached Level II-III on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale,” Ricko said on Monday, September 14.
At this intensity, people can clearly feel vibrations inside buildings. Hanging light objects may also swing, while the shaking can feel similar to a passing truck.
Despite the earthquake being felt across several areas, BMKG said coastal communities face no tsunami threat.
“Our modeling and analysis show that this earthquake has no potential to trigger a tsunami,” Ricko said on September 14.
BMKG has urged residents to remain calm and avoid unverified information. People should rely on official updates from BMKG’s verified communication channels.
So far, local disaster management agencies have reported no confirmed building damage linked to the earthquake.
