Jakarta, ThedailyID — A suspected whale shark was found stranded on Pengeragoan Beach, Jembrana, Bali, on Saturday, September 12, 2026.
Residents first spotted the marine animal in shallow waters around 8:30 a.m. local time in Pengeragoan Village, Pekutatan District.
Pekutatan Police Chief Commissioner Benyamin Nikijuluw said the animal had a large, elongated body with dark skin and white spots. It also appeared to have a dorsal fin.
“Based on initial observations at the site, the animal has a large and elongated body, a dark-colored surface with white spots, and appears to have a dorsal fin,” Benyamin said, Sunday, September 13, 2026.
Based on these physical features, authorities suspect the animal is a whale shark (Rhincodon typus). However, the identification remains preliminary.
Authorities said marine and conservation experts must conduct further examinations to confirm the species.
Meanwhile, police secured the area around the beach. The measure aims to protect the animal and give relevant agencies space to handle the situation.
Benyamin urged residents not to take action on their own.
“We urge the public not to take any action themselves. Do not pull, hit, ride, move, or take any part of the animal,” he said.
Police are also coordinating with the village government and relevant agencies. The coordination aims to ensure the animal receives proper and safe handling.
Benyamin also asked residents around Pengeragoan Beach to remain calm. He urged them not to approach the animal excessively and to leave the identification and handling process to authorized officials.
The police said the response also supports marine conservation efforts. Authorities aim to handle the stranded animal humanely and according to conservation procedures.
The latest report does not confirm whether the animal was alive or dead when authorities began handling the case.
