Jakarta, ThedailyID — President Prabowo Subianto warned that major powers are increasingly using trade as a weapon amid growing global uncertainty.
Prabowo made the remarks in front of Russian President Vladimir Putin at the 11th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in Vladivostok, Russia, on Thursday (03/09/2026).
“Today, trade is often used as a weapon,” Prabowo said during his speech, Thursday (03/09/2026).
He said global supply chains now face growing distrust. He also pointed to the geographic fragmentation of the global financial system.
Prabowo expressed hope that agreements reached in Vladivostok could offer concrete answers to the challenges facing the world today.
He also emphasized Indonesia’s independent and active foreign policy. According to Prabowo, Indonesia will not join military alliances but remains open to economic partnerships.
“Our FTA with the Eurasian Economic Union is a concrete example of this. It is not an alliance against anyone, but a partnership for shared prosperity,” Prabowo said, Thursday (03/09/2026).
“Indonesia works with the East, West, North and South as a sovereign and equal partner,” he added, Thursday (03/09/2026).
Prabowo’s remarks came as global trade faces rising geopolitical tensions and shifting economic relationships. His message also underscored Indonesia’s position as a country seeking economic cooperation across different blocs.
The EEF brought Prabowo and Putin together in Vladivostok as Indonesia and Russia continue to strengthen their bilateral relationship.
