Jakarta, ThedailyID — Russian President Vladimir Putin laughed after Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said he came to Vladivostok to “pay his debt” during a lunch hosted in the Russian city on Thursday (03/09/2026).
Prabowo referred to his absence from the Russia-ASEAN Summit in Kazan in June. He apologized for missing the event because of domestic issues that required his attention.
“First, please allow me to convey my deepest apologies because I could not attend that important event due to domestic issues that I could not leave. But I am paying my debt by coming to Vladivostok now. Once again, thank you,” said Prabowo, as quoted from the official YouTube channel of the Presidential Secretariat, Thursday (03/09/2026).
After hearing the translated remarks, Putin laughed and nodded. The Russian president appeared to accept Prabowo’s apology with a smile.
Prabowo visited Vladivostok as the guest of honor at the 11th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF). Putin welcomed his participation and highlighted Indonesia’s importance to Russia.
“I would like to thank Mr. President for his willingness to visit Vladivostok and take part in the Eastern Economic Forum as the guest of honor,” Putin said.
“Indonesia is Russia’s most important partner in the Asia-Pacific region. We have been connected by friendly relations for many years,” Putin added.
Prabowo also congratulated Russia on its National Day on June 12, 2026, and the 35th Russia-ASEAN commemorative summit held on June 18.
The meeting highlighted the longstanding relationship between Indonesia and Russia, while Prabowo’s lighthearted remark created a relaxed moment between the two leaders.
