Messi Retires, Nico Paz Tipped to Take Over Argentina’s Iconic No. 10

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Nico Paz has reportedly emerged as the leading candidate to inherit Argentina’s iconic No. 10 shirt following Lionel Messi’s retirement from international football.

Messi had worn the number for Argentina since March 2009. After more than 17 years, the 39-year-old forward announced his retirement from the national team earlier this week.

Argentina cannot officially retire the No. 10 shirt because FIFA requires national teams to use consecutive squad numbers.

According to Sportbible, citing ESPN Argentina, Nico Paz could take over the legendary number if Lionel Scaloni extends his contract as Argentina coach in the coming months.

The 21-year-old midfielder has developed into one of Argentina’s promising talents since joining Como 1907 under coach Cesc Fabregas. Como later made his move permanent from Real Madrid for a significant fee.

Paz made his Argentina debut under Scaloni in October 2024 against Bolivia during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. He has since made 11 appearances, scoring one goal and providing one assist.

His club form has also strengthened his case. During the 2025/26 season with Como, Paz played 40 matches, scoring 13 goals and registering eight assists.

Messi’s departure leaves a major gap in Argentina’s squad. The No. 10 shirt carries even greater significance after his long reign, but Paz could now have the opportunity to begin a new chapter for the iconic number.
