Jakarta, ThedailyID — Larak Island is a small Iranian island that has suddenly become a major flashpoint between the United States and Iran.

US forces struck two Iranian launchers on the island on Sunday, August 30, after US officials said Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was preparing to launch rockets carrying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz. The strike marked the first known US attack oWhy Iran’s Larak Island Became Targeted by The USn Iranian territory since late July.

Where Is Larak Island?

Larak sits in Iran’s Hormozgan Province, near the eastern entrance of the Strait of Hormuz. It is also close to the islands of Qeshm and Hormuz.

Despite covering only around 49 square kilometers and having a population of roughly 466 people, its location gives the island significant strategic value.

Why Is the Island So Important?

Larak sits near one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints.

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the wider Arabian Sea. A large share of global oil shipments passes through the waterway, making any disruption there a major concern for international energy markets.

The island’s position has also made it useful for Iran’s military infrastructure, including missile and other defense systems.

Why Did the US Strike It?

According to a US official, American forces observed IRGC personnel preparing to launch rockets equipped with sea mines toward the Strait of Hormuz.

The United States said the strike was intended to prevent the mines from being deployed and to protect commercial shipping through the waterway.

“US forces struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island,” a US official said, adding that IRGC forces had been preparing to launch rockets with sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz, Monday (31/08).

Iran’s IRGC condemned the attack and said several soldiers and civilians were killed or wounded. It also warned that the attack would receive a response.

A New Flashpoint in the Strait

The attack has raised tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, where maritime security remains closely tied to global energy supplies.

Iran later said it launched missiles at US bases in Jordan in retaliation for the Larak strike. Jordanian authorities said eight missiles were intercepted.

Larak may be a small island, but its location places it directly beside one of the world’s most strategically important waterways. That makes the island far more significant than its size suggests.
