Jakarta, ThedailyID — Jeff Bezos believes success is not defined by the talents people are born with, but by the choices they make with those talents.
In a video titled I Got Rich When I Understood This, Bezos reflects on his decision to leave a secure career, pursue his passion and build what would eventually become one of the world’s largest companies. The Amazon founder also discusses why choosing difficult paths can create a more meaningful life.
Choosing Passion Over Security
Bezos recalls working at a financial firm in New York City when he told his boss that he wanted to start an online company selling books.
His boss supported the idea but warned that leaving a good job for an uncertain venture carried significant risks. Despite those concerns, Bezos decided that failing would be easier to accept than never trying.
“I didn’t think I’d regret trying and failing,” Bezos said in the video, Friday (21/08).
He ultimately chose what he described as the less safe path because he believed he would regret not pursuing his idea.
Your Choices Matter More Than Your Gifts
For Bezos, natural talent can provide an advantage, but it is not something people earn.
“It’s the choices that define us, not our gifts,” Bezos said.
He argues that people should take pride in how they use their abilities rather than simply in the abilities themselves. Hard work, persistence and the willingness to take on difficult challenges are choices anyone can make.
Comfort or Adventure?
Bezos also encourages people to think about the kind of life they want to look back on.
“You can choose a life of ease and comfort or you can choose a life of service and adventure,” he said.
He believes the latter is more likely to create lasting pride because it requires people to take risks, serve others and push beyond what feels comfortable.
Build Something That Helps Others
Bezos says successful ideas often come from creating products or services that allow other people to achieve more.
“You’re very lucky if you have a career,” Bezos said, emphasizing the importance of finding work that people genuinely care about.
He also argues that people should use their abilities to empower others rather than pursue success solely for themselves.
The Questions That Shape a Life
Toward the end of the video, Bezos poses a series of questions about how people want to live. He asks whether they will follow their passions or simply follow inertia, choose originality over convention, and respond to failure with persistence.
His central message is that people cannot choose the gifts they receive, but they can choose what they do with them.
“How will you use these gifts, and will you take pride in your gifts or pride in your choices?” Bezos asks.
For Bezos, those decisions ultimately become the story people write about their own lives.
