Jakarta, ThedailyID — Having a friend cancel plans can be frustrating, especially when it happens repeatedly. While occasional cancellations may be understandable, frequent changes can affect trust and make friendships difficult to maintain.

However, addressing the issue does not always mean ending the friendship. Several steps can help you communicate your concerns while setting healthier boundaries.

Here are five ways to deal with a friend who often cancels plans:

1. Communicate clearly

Make sure both sides understand the plan and expectations. If your friend cancels, explain how the decision affects you rather than keeping your frustration to yourself.

Clear communication can also help prevent the same issue from happening again.

2. Explain your expectations

Not everyone gives the same importance to a plan. If something matters to you, explain that clearly when making the arrangement.

This gives your friend a better understanding of why keeping the commitment matters.

3. Prioritize your time

Your time is valuable, so avoid repeatedly setting aside important time for someone who often cancels. Consider making plans that fit more comfortably into your schedule.

Setting boundaries can also prevent repeated disappointment.

4. Give them a warning

If cancellations continue, address the behavior directly but politely. Let your friend know that repeatedly canceling plans bothers you.

A calm conversation may help them understand that you are not comfortable with the pattern.

5. Reconsider the friendship

If you have tried communicating and setting boundaries but nothing changes, it may be worth reassessing the friendship.

Repeated cancellations without reasonable explanations could indicate that the relationship is no longer working well for both sides.

Ultimately, maintaining a friendship requires consideration from both people. Setting boundaries does not necessarily mean ending a friendship. Sometimes, it simply means making sure your time and feelings receive the same respect you give to others.
