Jakarta, ThedailyID — Indonesia recorded 601 ship-related accidents between January and August 15, 2026, with 239 people reported dead and 203 others still missing.
The figures were presented by Basarnas Chief Marshal TNI Mohammad Syafii during a meeting with Commission V of the Indonesian House of Representatives in Jakarta on Wednesday, August 19.
“Based on the operations we conducted from January to August 15, 2026, we recorded 601 SAR operations,” Syafii said, according to detikcom.
The 601 operations involved a total of 3,607 victims. Basarnas reported that 3,165 people were rescued alive, while 239 died and 203 remained missing.
Foreign nationals were also among those affected. Syafii said 220 of the 3,607 victims were foreign nationals.
“Of the 3,607 victims, there were 220 foreign nationals. The types of accidents ranged from leaking vessels to medical evacuation missions,” Syafii said.
The incidents involved various types of maritime emergencies, highlighting the wide range of situations handled by Indonesia’s search and rescue agency.
The data covers incidents recorded through August 15, meaning it does not represent the full number of maritime accidents for 2026.
The figures also underscore the challenges facing maritime transportation and search-and-rescue operations across Indonesia, an archipelagic country heavily reliant on sea transport.
