Jakarta, ThedailyID — South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has expressed his condolences to Indonesia following the powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) on Saturday (Aug. 15).
Lee conveyed his message through a post on X on Monday (Aug. 17), expressing his deep sorrow over the disaster and its impact on eastern Indonesia.
“On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Korea, I extend my deepest condolences and sympathy to the victims and families who have lost their loved ones and homes,” Lee said.
He also expressed hope that rescue teams would find more survivors as search and rescue operations continued.
“I sincerely hope that more victims will be found alive and reunited with their families,” he said.
Lee was among several world leaders who offered condolences following the earthquake. Chinese President Xi Jinping and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also sent messages of support to Indonesia.
According to Xinhua, Xi expressed deep condolences to those who lost their lives and sympathy to the families and people injured in the disaster.
“Xi expressed his belief that under the leadership of the Indonesian government led by President Prabowo, the Indonesian people will be able to overcome the disaster and rebuild their homeland in the near future,” Xinhua reported.
Meanwhile, Pezeshkian offered to provide humanitarian and medical assistance if Indonesia needed it.
“We express our readiness to provide humanitarian and medical assistance,” Pezeshkian said, according to Iran’s IRNA news agency.
He also expressed hope that stability and calm would soon return to areas affected by the earthquake.
The international messages came as Indonesian authorities continued search and rescue operations in NTT following the deadly earthquake.
