Jakarta, ThedailyID — Islam Makhachev defeated Ian Machado Garry by unanimous decision at UFC 330 in Philadelphia on Sunday, August 16, Indonesia time.
Makhachev won all three judges’ scorecards, with scores of 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47. The victory allowed him to retain the UFC welterweight championship.
The Russian fighter controlled much of the opening round with his grappling. He repeatedly took Garry down and controlled him near the cage.
In the second round, Garry increased his striking pressure. However, Makhachev responded with a head kick that dropped the Irish fighter before taking the fight back to the ground.
Garry improved in the third and fourth rounds. He defended several takedown attempts and landed punches to Makhachev’s face and body.
Makhachev returned to his grappling game in the final round. He secured another takedown and took Garry’s back before attempting a rear-naked choke.
Garry survived the submission attempt and remained in the fight until the final bell.
The victory improved Makhachev’s MMA record to 29-1. It also marked his 17th consecutive UFC victory, breaking the previous UFC record he shared with Anderson Silva.
Despite the loss, Garry showed resilience throughout the five-round fight. Makhachev also praised his opponent’s toughness after the bout.
