Jakarta, ThedailyID — A school shooting in Nonthaburi, Thailand, left seven people dead, including the suspected gunman, after a student opened fire at an elite school on August 7, 2026, authorities said.
The shooting took place at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Bangkok’s neighboring Nonthaburi Province at around 10:00 a.m. local time, according to police.
Authorities identified the suspect as a 14-year-old ninth-grade student.
Witnesses said the teenager walked through several classrooms before opening fire. He later barricaded himself inside a room.
Police said 15 other people suffered injuries during the attack.
Officers later found the suspect dead. Police believe he died by suicide.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul expressed condolences to the victims’ families and said the tragedy underscored Thailand’s restrictions on civilian firearm ownership.
“This is truly terrible. It should never have happened. I feel deeply for the victims and regret that such an incident occurred in our country,” Anutin said.
Thailand has one of the highest rates of civilian gun ownership in Southeast Asia, with an estimated 10 million firearms in circulation, or roughly one gun for every seven people.
The country has experienced several high-profile mass shootings in recent years despite government efforts to tighten gun regulations.
In February 2026, police shot and arrested a teenage suspect after a school shooting in southern Thailand that killed a principal and injured two students.
In 2022, a former police officer killed 36 people, including 24 children, during an attack on a childcare center in northeastern Thailand, one of the deadliest mass killings in the country’s history.
