U.S. Returns $100 Billion in Trump Tariffs After Supreme Court Ruling

Jakarta, ThedailyID — The United States has begun returning about US$100 billion in tariffs collected under President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” trade policy after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down much of the measure.

A filing with the U.S. Court of International Trade said officials had completed the refund process, including interest, and sent the payments to the U.S. Treasury Department for disbursement.

“The refund (duties plus interest) of approximately US$100 billion has been completed and sent to the U.S. Treasury for payment,” the court filing said, according to NBC News.

The refund represents about 60% of the US$165 billion in tariffs Trump imposed on imports from multiple countries in April 2025. He introduced the tariffs to reduce the U.S. trade deficit.

In February, the Supreme Court ruled that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) did not give the president unilateral authority to impose broad import tariffs.

The ruling required the government to reimburse companies that had paid the duties.

Trump later announced a new 10% tariff under a different legal authority that previous U.S. presidents had not used for similar measures.

Last month, he also introduced another round of global tariffs under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, which allows the U.S. to respond to unfair or discriminatory trade practices.

A coalition of 25 U.S. states has challenged those tariffs in court, according to The Guardian.
