Jakarta, ThedailyID — A landslide in North Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi, has cut off road access to two villages. The disaster has left 2,104 residents isolated, local officials said.
Heavy rain triggered the landslide in North Bungku District early on Friday, July 24. The downpour caused the Swuya River to overflow and erode a hillside near Salan Samoing Sunga.
The collapsing slope buried the only road connecting Salubiro Village and Lemowalia Village with nearby areas.
“The landslide cut off road access to Lemowalia and Salubiro villages,” Central Sulawesi BPBD chief Asbudianto said on Monday, July 27.
Asbudianto said the river washed away the base of a three-metre hillside. Without support, the slope collapsed onto the road.
BPBD recorded 500 households, or about 1,700 people, in Salubiro as affected. Another 127 households, or 404 people, in Lemowalia also remain isolated.
Officials have not reported any deaths or evacuations.
Local authorities and BPBD teams are working to reopen the road.
“Our latest assessment shows both villages remain isolated because vehicles still cannot pass,” Asbudianto said.
BPBD also urged residents to stay alert. Forecasters expect more heavy rain, increasing the risk of additional landslides.
