Jakarta, ThedailyID — German police are searching for a suspect after a vehicle plowed into a crowd near a Berlin Pride celebration, killing one person and injuring at least 16 others.
Authorities found the suspected vehicle abandoned several hundred meters from the celebration site in Tiergarten, a large public park in central Berlin.
The search continued across the German capital on Sunday, July 26, with support from helicopters and police officers from several federal states.
Police spokesperson Nath said investigators have identified a suspect but have not made an arrest.
Officials expanded the search to the entire city after discovering the abandoned vehicle, which police described as resembling a minivan or a small SUV.
A witness near the main Pride stage at the Brandenburg Gate said the celebration ended abruptly when police ordered participants to leave the area.
“Go home, please,” officers told the crowd as emergency responders rushed to treat victims, according to AFP.
The incident occurred on Saturday when a vehicle entered Tiergarten and struck people gathered near the Pride event.
“We believe a vehicle entered Tiergarten and struck several people,” Berlin police said, according to AFP.
Berlin Fire Department spokesperson Dominik Pretz said the crash killed one person and injured 16 others, including three who suffered life-threatening injuries.
Emergency crews also treated around 30 people for shock at the scene.
Police have not announced a motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.
