Can Cracking Your Neck Cause a Stroke? Here's What Experts Say

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Cracking your neck to relieve stiffness may feel satisfying, but medical experts say forceful neck manipulation can, in rare cases, increase the risk of stroke.

The concern has gained attention after reports of people suffering strokes following sudden neck movements. Although these cases remain uncommon, neurologists warn that the risk is real.

One widely reported case involved KayLynne Felthager, a woman from the United States. She often cracked her neck to ease headaches. After one session, she developed severe neck pain that persisted for several days. She later struggled to move her head and found it difficult to speak clearly. Doctors eventually diagnosed her with a stroke.

Neurologist Priyam Bordoloi explained that the neck contains the carotid and vertebral arteries, which supply blood to the brain. A sudden or forceful twist can sometimes tear the inner lining of these arteries.

The injury, known as cervical artery dissection, may trigger blood clots. Those clots can travel to the brain and block blood flow, leading to a stroke.

According to Bordoloi, cervical artery dissection is one of the leading causes of stroke among otherwise healthy people under the age of 45. Trauma or excessive pressure on the neck can increase the risk.

Doctors advise people not to force their neck to produce a cracking sound, especially through aggressive twisting or self-manipulation. The spine, nerves, and blood vessels in the neck require careful handling.

Experts also encourage the public to recognize the warning signs of a stroke. Common symptoms include a drooping face, sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body, and slurred or difficult speech.

Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek emergency medical care immediately. Early treatment significantly improves the chances of recovery.

Although the risk remains low, experts say people should avoid excessive neck manipulation and consult a healthcare professional if neck pain or stiffness persists.
