Jakarta, ThedailyID — Lamine Yamal says he has the perfect birthday gift in mind ahead of Spain’s 2026 FIFA World Cup semifinal against France: a place in the tournament final.
The Spain star has attracted plenty of attention throughout the World Cup. However, many observers believe he has yet to reach his best form.
“Everyone says I’m not at my best yet, so they shouldn’t expect anything from me in the next match,” Yamal said, according to La Nacion.
“But I can promise that tomorrow will be a very special day.”
The match also coincides with Yamal’s 19th birthday on July 13. Instead of hoping for presents, the Barcelona winger said he plans to reward himself with a victory.
“I haven’t received many gifts yet,” he said. “But I’ll give myself a win tomorrow and the chance to go to New York for the World Cup final.”
Yamal has scored just one goal during the tournament. His performances have drawn comparisons with the form he showed while helping Spain win UEFA Euro 2024.
A hamstring injury before the World Cup raised doubts about his availability. Nevertheless, the teenager has remained a regular starter throughout the competition.
Although his numbers have been modest, Yamal continues to trouble opposing defenses with his pace, dribbling, and creativity. His consistent displays have earned the trust of Spain’s coaching staff as the team prepares for a crucial semifinal clash against France.
