India Secures Australian Uranium Deal to Expand Nuclear Energy

Jakarta, ThedailyID — India has secured a uranium supply agreement with Australia as Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeks to expand the country’s nuclear power capacity to meet rising electricity demand.

Modi announced the deal after holding bilateral talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese during his state visit to Australia on Thursday.

“We have signed an important agreement on nuclear energy today,” Modi said. “It will pave the way for uranium supplies from Australia to India and give fresh momentum to our clean energy goals.”

Australia holds the world’s largest known uranium reserves, accounting for around 28% of global resources, or an estimated 1.68 million metric tons.

In a joint statement, the two countries said the agreement allows long-term uranium exports from Australia to India exclusively for peaceful purposes. In addition, the exports will remain under safeguards set by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Albanese said the agreement will help India increase the share of non-fossil fuel energy in its electricity mix.

India and Australia first signed a civil nuclear cooperation agreement in 2015. However, the new deal strengthens long-term uranium supplies as India accelerates its nuclear energy expansion.

Beyond nuclear cooperation, both leaders agreed to deepen defense ties and strengthen supply chains for critical minerals.

The two countries also announced plans to establish a temporary space tracking station on Australia’s Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the Indian Ocean to support future space cooperation.

The agreements reflect growing strategic and economic ties between India and Australia as both countries expand cooperation across energy, security, and advanced technology.
