Strict Parenting Can Affect Children Well Into Adulthood, Experts Say

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Every parent wants the best for their child. However, psychologists warn that excessive control and strict discipline without emotional support can leave lasting effects that extend well into adulthood.

Developmental psychologist Diana Baumrind identified this approach as authoritarian parenting. The parenting style emphasizes strict rules, high expectations, and obedience while offering little emotional warmth or open communication.

Experts stress that discipline itself is beneficial. Children need structure and boundaries to develop healthy habits. Problems arise when control consistently outweighs emotional support and opportunities for children to express themselves.

Here are 10 long-term effects often associated with overly strict parenting.

1. Low self-esteem

Children who grow up under constant criticism or excessive control often doubt their own abilities. As adults, they may struggle with confidence, avoid new challenges, and rely heavily on validation from others.

2. Fear of making mistakes

Strict parenting can encourage perfectionism. Children may associate mistakes with punishment rather than learning, making them overly anxious about failure later in life.

3. Greater risk of anxiety and depression

A home environment with limited emotional support may increase the risk of anxiety and depression. Adults raised under authoritarian parenting may also struggle to understand and regulate their emotions.

4. Difficulty expressing emotions

Children who learn to suppress their feelings to avoid conflict often carry the habit into adulthood. As a result, they may find it difficult to communicate their needs or express disagreement in personal relationships.

5. Higher likelihood of rebellion

Interestingly, stricter rules do not always produce more obedient children. Research suggests authoritarian parenting can increase rebellious behavior because children may follow rules out of fear instead of trust and respect.

6. Behavioral problems

Studies have linked authoritarian parenting to higher rates of aggression, hyperactivity, defiance, and antisocial behavior. Children raised in these environments may also struggle with social skills.

7. Greater risk of bullying

Children raised in highly controlling households may become either victims or perpetrators of bullying. Low self-esteem can make some children more vulnerable, while others may imitate aggressive behavior learned at home.

8. Poor self-regulation

Children need opportunities to make decisions and experience consequences. Without that experience, they may struggle to manage emotions, solve problems independently, and regulate their behavior as adults.

9. Difficulty setting boundaries

Adults raised under authoritarian parenting often find it hard to say “no.” They may prioritize other people’s needs over their own and become more vulnerable to unhealthy relationships.

10. Increased risk of obesity

Research has also found a link between authoritarian parenting and a higher risk of obesity among preschool and school-age children. Experts believe stress, eating habits, and limited self-regulation may contribute to this association.

Psychologists emphasize that healthy parenting combines clear expectations with warmth, empathy, and open communication. Children benefit most when discipline is balanced with emotional support and opportunities to develop independence.
