Jakarta, ThedailyID — Indonesia’s benchmark stock index closed sharply lower on Friday, with broad-based selling dragging the Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) down 1.72% to 5,896.
The index lost 102.9 points from the previous session, according to RTI Infokom. Investors traded Rp12.66 trillion (about US$773 million) worth of shares during the session.
Trading volume reached 20.76 billion shares across 1.53 million transactions. Market breadth remained firmly negative as 562 stocks declined, 123 advanced and 129 ended unchanged.
All 11 sectoral indices finished in negative territory. The basic materials sector posted the steepest decline, falling 4.91%.
Meanwhile, most major Asian stock markets also closed lower.
China’s Shanghai Composite Index dropped 2.26%, while Singapore’s Straits Times Index slipped 0.48%. Japan’s Nikkei 225 tumbled 4.15%, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index fell 1.76%.
European markets also traded lower. Germany’s DAX Index lost 0.91%, while the UK’s FTSE 100 declined 0.67%.
U.S. markets delivered mixed performances. The S&P 500 edged down 0.01%, and the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.46%.
However, the Dow Jones Industrial Average bucked the broader trend and gained 0.14%.
