Pertamina Tanker Safely Crosses Strait of Hormuz Amid Regional Tensions

Jakarta, ThedailyID — One of two oil tankers operated by PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) has safely passed through the Strait of Hormuz, while a second vessel remains on standby as the company continues monitoring security conditions in the region.

Acting Corporate Secretary Vega Pita said the tanker Pertamina Gamsunoro completed its transit on Wednesday night. She credited the successful passage to close coordination between PIS, Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indonesian embassies in Tehran and Iran.

“We identified dozens of requirements before the vessel could depart,” Vega said during a media briefing in Jakarta on Thursday.

She said the company reviewed insurance coverage, technical readiness, operational procedures, security measures and crew preparedness before allowing the tanker to leave the Arabian Gulf.

Meanwhile, PIS monitored the voyage around the clock. Crew members remained in constant contact with a crisis center onshore to ensure the vessel’s safe passage.

The company also continued coordinating with government agencies, international stakeholders and relevant authorities. According to Vega, those efforts allowed PIS to monitor developments in real time and adjust operations when necessary.

The successful transit marks an important step for PIS as it maintains shipping operations despite ongoing geopolitical uncertainty. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical routes for global energy supplies.

Meanwhile, PIS’s second vessel in the Arabian Gulf, VLCC Pertamina Pride, is preparing for its own transit. The company said it is still evaluating security conditions, vessel traffic, congestion and other operational risks before giving final approval.

PIS is also considering recommendations from international maritime authorities before allowing the tanker to proceed.

Vega thanked the Indonesian public for supporting the crew aboard Pertamina Gamsunoro. She also expressed hope that VLCC Pertamina Pride would soon cross the Strait of Hormuz safely.
