Gen Z Most Likely to Ask for Higher Salaries, Study Finds

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Generation Z employees are the most confident when it comes to asking for a salary increase, according to a recent workplace survey. Meanwhile, Generation X workers are the least likely to negotiate for higher pay despite having more years of experience.

The findings highlight a growing shift in workplace attitudes as younger employees become more comfortable discussing salaries and advocating for better compensation.

The survey found that Gen Z workers are more willing to negotiate raises because they place greater importance on financial growth, career progression, and work-life balance. Many also view salary discussions as a normal part of professional development rather than an uncomfortable conversation.

In contrast, many Generation X employees tend to accept their existing salaries without requesting increases. Researchers suggest this reflects a workplace culture in which loyalty and long-term commitment often outweighed salary negotiations.

Experts say younger generations have entered the workforce during a period of rising living costs and greater transparency around pay. Access to salary information online has also encouraged employees to better understand their market value.

Career experts recommend that employees prepare carefully before asking for a raise. They should gather evidence of their performance, research industry salary benchmarks, and choose an appropriate time to discuss compensation with their employer.

While confidence plays an important role, experts stress that successful salary negotiations depend on measurable achievements, strong communication skills, and a clear understanding of the company’s financial situation.

The survey suggests workplace expectations are continuing to evolve, with younger generations becoming more proactive in shaping their careers and negotiating for better opportunities.
