Jakarta, ThedailyID — US Vice President JD Vance arrived in Switzerland on Sunday to begin a new round of negotiations with Iranian officials. The talks aim to preserve the fragile peace agreement signed earlier this week and lay the groundwork for a broader nuclear deal.

Vance landed at Emmen Air Base near Lucerne alongside Second Lady Usha Vance. He said the negotiations are expected to last several days. Senior US envoy Steve Witkoff and other American officials also joined the delegation.

The discussions follow a memorandum of understanding signed by Washington and Tehran. Under the agreement, both sides have 60 days to negotiate a permanent framework covering Iran’s nuclear program and broader regional security issues.

The negotiations face immediate challenges. Iran recently announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz after renewed Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon. However, the US military said commercial shipping continues through the strategic waterway.

Besides nuclear restrictions, negotiators will discuss sanctions relief, regional stability, and a longer-term ceasefire. The United States also wants Iran to allow international inspectors access to its nuclear facilities.

Iran has made sanctions relief a key priority. Its delegation includes senior officials responsible for oil and financial policy, highlighting Tehran’s focus on restoring its economy.

The talks come after days of uncertainty. Earlier plans nearly collapsed because of escalating violence between Israel and Hezbollah. Mediators from Pakistan and Qatar helped bring both sides back to the negotiating table.

Although both governments have expressed optimism, analysts say the negotiations remain delicate. Any renewed military escalation or disagreement over nuclear commitments could derail the process before a final agreement is reached.
