7 Everyday Habits That May Increase Cancer Risk

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, and while genetics play a role, everyday lifestyle choices can also significantly affect a person’s risk of developing the disease.

Health experts warn that several common habits, when practiced over a long period, may increase the likelihood of cancer. Recognizing and changing these behaviors can help lower the risk.

One of the biggest risk factors is smoking, which remains the leading preventable cause of cancer. Tobacco use has been linked to cancers of the lungs, mouth, throat, bladder, pancreas, and several other organs.

Excessive alcohol consumption is another major concern. Regularly drinking large amounts of alcohol can raise the risk of liver, breast, colorectal, esophageal, and mouth cancers.

An unhealthy diet, especially one high in processed meats, ultra-processed foods, and low in fruits and vegetables, may also contribute to cancer development. Maintaining a balanced diet rich in fiber and nutrients is recommended.

Physical inactivity and obesity are also associated with an increased risk of several cancers, including breast, colon, and endometrial cancer. Experts advise adults to engage in regular exercise and maintain a healthy body weight.

Frequent exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays without adequate protection can damage skin cells and increase the risk of skin cancer. Wearing sunscreen, protective clothing, and limiting direct sun exposure during peak hours can help reduce the danger.

Chronic sleep deprivation may also negatively affect the body’s immune system and hormone regulation. While research is ongoing, consistently getting enough quality sleep is considered an important part of overall cancer prevention.

Lastly, skipping routine health screenings can delay the detection of cancer. Regular medical checkups and recommended screenings improve the chances of identifying the disease at an early stage, when treatment is often more effective.

Although these habits do not guarantee someone will develop cancer, reducing risk factors through healthier lifestyle choices remains one of the most effective ways to support long-term health.
