Jakarta, ThedailyID — A house fire broke out in Setiabudi, South Jakarta, early Wednesday after a gas stove reportedly exploded, injuring two elderly residents.
The fire occurred at a home on Jalan Karang Asem Utara in Kuningan Timur at around 3:00 a.m. local time.
According to South Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency Chief Asril Rizal, the victims were identified as S, 60, and M, 70. Both suffered burn injuries and authorities rushed them to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Firefighters deployed 14 fire engines and 57 personnel to the scene. They battled the blaze for more than two hours before bringing it under control.
Authorities officially concluded firefighting operations at 5:30 a.m.
Preliminary findings suggest a gas stove explosion triggered the fire. The incident reportedly began when a family member attempted to cook and turned on the stove.
However, the appliance exploded and quickly ignited a fire that spread through the property.
The blaze affected an area measuring approximately 395 square meters. Meanwhile, officials continue to assess the full extent of the damage and calculate financial losses.
Authorities are also conducting further investigations to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the explosion.
The incident serves as another reminder for residents to regularly inspect gas appliances and follow safety procedures when cooking at home.
