South Korea Extends Remarkable World Cup Comeback Record in 2026

Jakarta, ThedailyID — South Korea once again showcased its resilience on the world stage after coming from behind to defeat the Czech Republic 2-1 in a Group A match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Taeguk Warriors fell behind in the 59th minute when Czech captain Ladislav Krejci found the net. However, South Korea responded through goals from Hwang In-beom and Oh Hyeon-gyu to secure a crucial victory.

The result added another chapter to South Korea’s impressive World Cup history. Among Asian nations, South Korea holds the record for the most World Cup victories after trailing during a match.

South Korea has now recorded four comeback wins in World Cup history. No other Asian team has achieved more.

One of the most memorable examples came at the 2002 World Cup. South Korea trailed Italy in the Round of 16 before equalizing and eventually winning through a golden goal.

Four years later, South Korea produced another comeback against Togo. The team recovered from an early deficit to claim a 2-1 victory in the group stage.

At the 2022 World Cup, South Korea once again demonstrated its fighting spirit. The team defeated Portugal 2-1 after falling behind and secured a place in the knockout stage.

Now, the Czech Republic has become the latest victim of South Korea’s comeback ability. As a result, the victory further strengthens the country’s reputation as one of Asia’s most resilient football nations.

Meanwhile, the win moved South Korea into second place in the Group A standings. The team trails host nation Mexico only on goal difference.

The 2026 tournament marks South Korea’s 12th World Cup appearance. Moreover, the country remains Asia’s most consistent World Cup participant, having qualified for every edition since 1986.
