Jakarta, ThedailyID — Hamas has warned Israel against any attempt to take control of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East Jerusalem, following renewed calls from Israeli far-right groups to expand Jewish access and sovereignty at the site.
The Palestinian group described the proposals as a dangerous escalation. Hamas also warned that any move affecting the status of Al-Aqsa could trigger broader unrest across the region.
Al-Aqsa Mosque is one of Islam’s holiest sites. At the same time, the compound, known to Jews as the Temple Mount, holds deep religious significance in Judaism.
Under a long-standing arrangement, Jordan oversees the Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem through the Islamic Waqf. Meanwhile, non-Muslims can visit the compound during designated hours, but they are not permitted to pray there.
Hamas accused Israel of attempting to alter the historical and legal status quo at the site. The group urged Palestinians and the wider Muslim world to remain vigilant against what it called repeated provocations.
The warning came after several Israeli politicians and activist groups renewed demands for greater Israeli control over the compound. Consequently, concerns have grown over possible tensions in Jerusalem.
Israeli authorities have not announced any official plan to seize Al-Aqsa Mosque. However, debates surrounding access and sovereignty at the site continue to generate controversy.
The Al-Aqsa compound has frequently served as a flashpoint in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Previous clashes at the site have triggered wider confrontations between Israeli forces and Palestinian groups.
The latest exchange of warnings comes as efforts to stabilize the region remain fragile. Therefore, international observers continue to monitor developments surrounding one of the Middle East’s most sensitive religious and political landmarks.
