Parents Should Watch for These Warning Signs of Depression in Children

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Depression can affect children as well as adults, yet many parents struggle to recognize the warning signs. Mental health experts say early detection plays a crucial role in helping children receive proper support and treatment.

Unlike adults, children may not always express sadness directly. Instead, they often show emotional and behavioral changes that can easily go unnoticed or be mistaken for normal childhood phases.

1. Persistent Sadness or Irritability

Children experiencing depression may appear sad, withdrawn, or unusually irritable for weeks at a time. They may become more sensitive, frustrated, or prone to emotional outbursts.

Experts note that irritability often appears more frequently than sadness in younger children with depression.

2. Loss of Interest in Favorite Activities

A child who suddenly loses interest in hobbies, sports, games, or activities they once enjoyed may be experiencing emotional distress.

Mental health professionals consider this one of the most common symptoms of depression.

3. Changes in Sleep Patterns

Depression can affect sleep quality and routines. Some children may sleep much more than usual, while others struggle with insomnia or frequent nighttime awakenings.

Ongoing sleep problems can also worsen emotional symptoms over time.

4. Appetite and Weight Changes

Parents should pay attention to significant changes in eating habits. Depression may cause some children to lose interest in food, while others may eat more than usual.

These changes can lead to noticeable weight loss or weight gain.

5. Difficulty Concentrating

Children with depression often find it harder to focus at school or complete daily tasks. Teachers and parents may notice declining academic performance or reduced participation in class activities.

Some children may appear distracted or forgetful even when trying their best.

6. Low Energy and Constant Fatigue

Depression can leave children feeling physically and emotionally exhausted. They may complain about feeling tired despite getting enough sleep.

Low energy levels can also affect school performance and social interactions.

7. Social Withdrawal

Children experiencing depression may avoid friends, family gatherings, or social activities. They may spend more time alone and show less interest in interacting with others.

Experts recommend monitoring sudden changes in social behavior, especially if they persist for several weeks.

8. Feelings of Worthlessness or Excessive Guilt

Some children develop negative views about themselves. They may frequently criticize themselves or express feelings of guilt that seem excessive for the situation.

Mental health professionals consider these thoughts important warning signs that require attention.

When Should Parents Seek Help?

Experts advise parents to seek professional support if symptoms last more than two weeks or begin interfering with daily life. Early intervention can help children manage symptoms and prevent more serious mental health problems.

Parents can start by having open conversations with their children and consulting pediatricians, psychologists, or mental health specialists. With proper support, many children with depression can recover and thrive.
