Jakarta, ThedailyID — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto joked about ministers with business backgrounds after the US dollar strengthened past Rp17,500 against the rupiah.
During a public event, Prabowo said ministers who previously came from the business world should not panic over the weakening rupiah because they were already familiar with currency fluctuations.
“Those from business backgrounds should be used to this. Don’t get shocked too easily,” Prabowo said while speaking in front of attendees.
The remark immediately drew attention online as the rupiah recently touched one of its weakest levels in years against the US dollar.
Economists said global uncertainty, high US interest rates, and geopolitical tensions continue pressuring emerging market currencies, including Indonesia’s rupiah.
Meanwhile, several banks reportedly began selling US dollars near Rp17,600.
Analysts warned that prolonged rupiah depreciation could increase import costs, inflation risks, and pressure on household purchasing power.
However, government officials continue expressing confidence in Indonesia’s economic fundamentals and financial stability.
Bank Indonesia also continues implementing monetary policies aimed at stabilizing the currency and controlling inflation.
Prabowo’s comments later spread widely across social media, with many users viewing the statement as a lighthearted response to ongoing economic pressure.
