Jakarta, ThedailyID — President Prabowo Subianto has unveiled a Rp4 trillion plan to build flyovers and upgrade railway crossings, days after the deadly Bekasi Timur train collision intensified calls for stronger rail safety measures.
The budget will support the construction of flyovers at key crossing points and improvements to existing at-grade rail intersections across Indonesia. The initiative aims to reduce accidents and ease traffic bottlenecks, especially in high-risk areas.
The announcement came as the government pushes stronger transportation safety measures, with rail crossings drawing renewed scrutiny after several deadly incidents.
Prabowo said the Rp4 trillion allocation would focus on crossings considered dangerous or heavily congested, while also accelerating supporting infrastructure linked to the rail network.
Officials said the program includes both new flyover construction and upgrades to crossings that still rely on older safety systems.
The government has framed the plan as both a public safety measure and an infrastructure modernization effort, aimed at improving mobility while reducing risks for motorists and pedestrians.
The initiative is also expected to support broader transportation connectivity goals, particularly as Indonesia continues expanding logistics and commuter rail infrastructure.
Government officials said rail crossings remain one of the most vulnerable points in the transport system, especially where road traffic and train routes intersect at grade.
The Rp4 trillion commitment marks one of the larger targeted allocations for rail crossing safety in recent years and signals stronger emphasis on accident prevention through infrastructure upgrades.
Authorities have not yet detailed the full list of project locations, but officials said implementation will prioritize high-risk crossings and strategic corridors.
