From Soda to Sweet Coffee: Drinks That Could Increase Kidney Failure Risk

Jakarta, ThedailyID — Health experts are raising concerns over the growing link between sugary drinks and kidney failure, warning that excessive daily intake may increase the risk of dialysis.

Recent findings highlight how beverages high in sugar, additives, and artificial flavoring can damage kidney function over time. These include soft drinks, sweetened coffee, energy drinks, and flavored teas.

According to the World Health Organization, high sugar consumption contributes to obesity and diabetes—two major risk factors for chronic kidney disease.

Moreover, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that diabetes remains the leading cause of kidney failure worldwide. When blood sugar levels stay high for long periods, they can damage blood vessels in the kidneys.

Experts also point out that sugary drinks often contain high levels of fructose. This type of sugar may increase uric acid levels, which can further strain kidney function and raise the risk of hypertension.

In addition, many packaged drinks contain sodium and preservatives. Over time, these substances may disrupt fluid balance and put extra pressure on the kidneys.

Health professionals recommend limiting daily sugar intake to reduce long-term risks. The WHO suggests keeping added sugar below 10% of total daily energy intake, and ideally under 5% for additional health benefits.

Switching to healthier alternatives can help. Water, unsweetened tea, and natural fruit-infused drinks provide hydration without excessive sugar or harmful additives. At the same time, experts stress the importance of reading nutrition labels. Many popular beverages contain hidden sugars that quickly exceed recommended daily limits.

Overall, reducing sugary drink consumption plays a key role in preventing chronic diseases. It also helps maintain kidney health and lowers the likelihood of requiring dialysis later in life.
